3) Education

Detail your educational background, starting with your most recent degree. Include the institution’s name, degree title, grade obtained, and dates you attended. You can also mention relevant coursework/modules, thesis title, and academic honours or awards here, this will strengthen your application. For example:

It is important to match the specific requirements and research interests of each PhD program you apply to. The main core of the CV will remain the same. You should adjust your research experience and skills. Maybe you should even change the order of the sections to align with the program’s focus.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• Overloading with irrelevant information: Don’t include any irrelevant information on your CV. This includes non-academic work experience that doesn’t add any value to the application. This will take the focus away from the relevant academic achievements


• Spelling and Formatting Errors: Make sure to proofread your CV. Grammatical errors can undermine the professionalism of the CV


• Using an Unprofessional email address: Use an email address that reflects your name, preferably your university email address. Don’t use something informal or quirky

Final Tips for a Standout CV

• Get Feedback: Ask a mentor, professor, or colleague to review your CV, providing constructive feedback

Use Action Verbs: Use strong action verbs to describe responsibilities and achievements (e.g., “conducted,” “analysed,” “published”).


• Maintain a master CV: keep a master version of your CV with all your experiences, publications, and achievements. This makes it easier to tailor and update your CV for each application
