How to set Goals: A Practical guide

Introduction

The new year is just around the corner! If you’re anything like me, the next year is going to be our time to lock in! Life is too short to let opportunities pass you by! Set meaningful goals to create the future you want. In this blog post, I’ll share practical strategies to help you set and achieve goals that stick, ensuring that next year is a year of growth, progress, and fulfillment!

1) Reflect on the past year

Before jumping into the new year, take time to reflect on this past year. What went well? What do you wish you could improve? Make a simple list to evaluate your wins, challenges, and lessons learned. Reflection lets you clearly identify areas of growth and ensures that your goals are meaningful and actionable. Think of this as clearing the slate and laying a strong foundation for the year ahead.

2) Identify your priorities

Let’s be real, not all goals are equal, and setting 20 goals for the year is unrealistic. The key is to focus on what truly matters to you. I recommend breaking life into categories to identify where you want to direct your energy. Here are a few areas to consider:

  • Personal Development

Invest in yourself! Whether it’s improving time management, learning a new skill, or building better habits, personal growth is the key to becoming the best version of yourself.

  • Career/Academics

Focus on professional or academic milestones. This can be working towards publishing a paper, completing a course, or networking with professionals in your field.

  • Health and Wellness

Prioritise your physical and mental well-being. Goals like maintaining a consistent workout routine, eating healthier, getting more sleep, or practicing mindfulness can improve the quality of your life.

  • Relationships and Social Life

Strong relationships require intentional effort. Whether it’s spending more time with loved ones, making new connections, or simply checking in on friends, building a support system is essential for balance and happiness.

  • Financial Goals

Plan to save, budget, or invest in your future. Financial stability enables you to achieve other goals without unnecessary stress.

  • Hobbies and passions

Don’t neglect the things that bring you joy! Set aside time to nurture your hobbies, explore creative passions, or try something new. This is the fuel that keeps life exciting and fulfilling.

3) Set your goals quarterly

Annual goals can feel overwhelming, but breaking them into quarterly chunks makes them more achievable. For example:

  • Q1 (January-March): Focus on building habits and consistency.
  • Q2 (April-June): Push toward progress, such as completing a project or learning a new skill.
  • Q3 (July-September): Evaluate your mid-year results and adjust where needed.
  • Q4 (October-December): Celebrate your wins and prepare for the next year.

4) SMART Goal Framework

This framework has been a lifesaver for my goals! This approach enables you to set goals that are clear, attainable, and effective. With SMART goals, you know exactly what you want and how you are going to achieve it.

Specific: Define your goal. For a goal to be effective, it needs to be specific. What do you want to achieve? What steps need to be taken to achieve this?

Measure: Quantifying your goals will make it easier to track progress. How will you track the process?

Achievable: Is your goal realistic? Give yourself a reality check; your goals need to be achievable! There is no point in setting an unrealistic goal and being disappointed when you don’t achieve them!

Relevant: Does this goal align with your priorities? Think about the big picture. How will achieving this goal lead you one step closer in becoming the person you want to be

Time: Your SMART goals should have an end date. Without a time limit, the project/goal may drag on. Deadlines create a sense of urgency, ensuring that short-term goals don’t turn into long-term ones.

For example, instead of saying, “I want to get fit,” set a SMART goal like, “I will work out three times a week for 30 minutes each session by the end of March.”

5) Celebrate small wins  

Nowadays, people are always so hard on themselves. We don’t have to wait until the big milestones to celebrate. Recognize the small steps you take along the way, whether it’s completing a week of workouts, meeting a savings goal, or finishing a challenging project. Reward yourself! It keeps motivation high and reminds you of the progress you have made.

6) Stay Accountable

Staying accountable is very important! There is no point in kidding yourself about your goals. Here are some ideas you can consider:

  • I personally love the idea of an ‘accountability partner/group’ where you all hold each other accountable! This can simply be friends or family or even online communities (e.g. study or fitness groups).
  • I also recommend using habit trackers to monitor progress.
  • Journals can also help you document your journey.

7) Adjust and Adapt

In an ideal world, we would follow a linear path to achieving our goals and everything would work out perfectly 100% of the time! But unfortunately, this is not an ideal world. Life happens and things might get in the way. It is important not to be so hard on yourself if your circumstances change; your goals will also change, and this is okay!

8) Tools and resources that may help

For goal setting, I personally love using a physical planner. Here, everything is in one place, and I can go back whenever I need to check that I am on track! I also know people love using digital planners. I recommend looking at websites such as Etsy or Notion for these!
