MRes vs MSc: Which Master’s Degree is Right for You?

Introduction

You have finished your undergraduate degree. Now, you are unsure whether you want to pursue an MSc (Master of Science) or an MRes (Master of Research). Though these are both master’s degrees, there are some differences. Choosing between an MRes vs. MSc can be difficult! Understanding these differences can allow you to make the right choice when deciding what postgraduate degree to study!

What is an MSc?

An MSc is a taught master’s degree that focuses on a specific area of scientific research. In the UK, they are normally a year, but the duration can vary from country to country. It primarily consists of taught modules. Just like in undergrad, you attend lectures and seminars to broaden your understanding of the subject. In addition to the taught modules, MSc programs generally include one large research project. This project makes up the dissertation and contributes significantly to the final grade.

Why should you do it?

I opted to study for an MSc in translational neuroscience as my undergraduate degree was in biochemistry. Therefore, I benefited from the modules that are taught to gain a deeper understanding of neuroscience! An MSc is right for you if:

  • You want to pivot into a new field of study and you will gain from structured learning to fill knowledge gaps
  • Your goal is to gain in-depth theoretical knowledge and practical skills which can be applied to both academia and industry
  • You’re planning a career where specific topic skill is crucial e.g. healthcare, data science, or engineering
Why should you not do it?

Depending on your goals, an MSc may not be the best option for you which is fine! An MSc might not be the best fit if:

  • Your undergraduate degree covered a similar curriculum; the taught modules can overlap significantly.
  • You prefer research-driven study rather than a structured, taught approach
  • You know for certain you want to have a career in research. Therefore, a research-intensive program may be better suited to you.

What is an MRes?

An MRes is another master’s degree that has a strong focus on research rather than following structured teaching. These programs are typically designed for students considering a career in research or planning to pursue a PhD. The course is almost entirely research-driven. Eventhough there are minimal taught elements, usually there is training in statistics or research methodology.

In the UK, MRes programs often include two or three rotation projects in different research groups. These projects take up the whole year. You’ll work closely with a supervisor or research team, gaining experience in project design, execution and analysis. Completing an MRes is also beneficial as you can gain broad research experience in different settings, while learning a wide range of techniques

Why should you do it?

Many people choose to do an MRes if they have covered the topic extensively in their undergraduate degree. An MRes could be the right path if:

  • You’re passionate about research and want to explore a specific topic in-depth
  • You’re aiming to pursue a PhD and want to gain extensive research experience in designing and conducting research
  • You want to get experience in a range of different lab settings to make sure research is definitely for you
  • You enjoy independent learning and thrive in self-directed environments with less emphasis on structured teaching
Why should you not do it?

Depending on your career goals, an MRes might not be what is best for you. Remember, it is completely different from undergrad. There is a lot less structure.

An MRes might not suit you if:

  • You prefer structured learning environment with lectures and seminars to guide your understanding
  • You’re not certain about pursuing a research career and want to broaden your career aspects
  • You’re new to the project and feel you need foundational knowledge before diving into advanced research

Both an MRes and an MSc are good choices to make after your undergraduate degree. Which one you choose will depend on career aspirations, learning preferences, and current expertise. Ultimately, both degrees can open doors to exciting opportunities in academia, industry, and beyond.
