Self-care for PhD students: Because burnout isn’t a personality trait

Let’s be honest, student life is a chaotic mixture of deadlines, lectures, practicals, caffeine; the list goes on! If you’re a PhD student, you already know that this academic marathon isn’t for the faint-hearted! Between cramming for exams and refreshing your email for assignment extensions, self-care can take a back seat! But the truth is, self-care isn’t a luxury; rather, it is a necessity. Self-care is your secret weapon to surviving! Self-care is crucial for PhD students to manage the pressure of their studies and to prevent burnout. This will lead to better academic performance and overall well-being!

  3. Create a Study Space That Doesn’t depress you
  4. Move your body!

1) Prioritize sleep!

‘Sleep is for the weak’ has to be one of the most ridiculous quotes ever! Sleep is very important. We’ve all been there, convincing ourselves to watch ‘just one more episode,’ thinking it won’t ruin our sleep schedule. Spoiler: It will 🥲. Lack of sleep can impair cognitive function, weaken your immune system, and cause mood disturbances! Getting an average of 8 hours a night allows the body and mind to recharge, strengthen the immune system, and help metabolism! This is your sign to start prioritizing sleep!!

2) Hydration & Nutrition: Caffeine Doesn’t Count

If coffee was a food group, students would be thriving, but alas, it isn’t. Running on coffee and pot noodles isn’t a sustainable lifestyle (tragic). Drinking enough water and eating healthy food is vital for maintaining good physical and mental health. It will ultimately improve mental function, which is NEEDED when you’re doing a PhD!

Must have products:

  • A motivation water bottle. This will guilt trip you into drinking water.
  • A portable blender for a quick nutritious smoothie whenever you can’t be bothered to cook!

3) Create a Study Space That Doesn’t depress you

Your study environment matters more than you think. A messy desk = a messy mind. So make sure you have an organized and clean workspace! If your workspace looks like a war zone, chances are your productivity will also suffer. A clean workspace will increase productivity, reduce stress, and boost mental clarity. Make a space where you actually want to sit and work (instead of lying in bed doomscrolling on TikTok).

  • A desk organiser for peak productivity, as well as desk accessories.

4) Move your body!

Sitting for hours will make your back hate you, and hunching over your laptop like a gremlin isn’t great for long-term health. A healthy body supports a healthy mind. Regular exercise and good posture can make all the difference. Even a quick stretch or a short walk can make you feel more human!

  • Must have products: A standing desk converter so you can switch things up
  • A yoga mat for stretching out all the stress.
  • A Fitbit! I use the Versa 4! A smartwatch is a good way to make sure you’re on top of all your fitness goals!

5) Take Mental Health breaks Without Guilt

Studying non-stop 24/7 does not make you productive, but miserable. Taking breaks keeps your brain functioning and prevents burnout. Disconnecting from your work from time to time allows you to step away from work, reducing feelings of overwhelm and promoting a better work-life balance. If your study breaks consist of doomscrolling, consider switching things up.

6) Master Time Management

Procrastination is a student’s worst enemy. Working smarter doesn’t mean working yourself to the bone! Time management helps students set realistic goals and track their progress, leading to a sense of accomplishment and motivation. Having a solid time management system means less stress, more sleep, and fewer “Why did I leave this to the last minute?” breakdowns.

Must have products:

  • A planner to keep your life together
  • A pomodoro timer, to help you focus in short bursts! (Instead of staring at your notes for hours and absorbing nothing!)

7) Make Time for socialising (Yes, Even Introverts!)

Sometimes being a PhD student can be lonely. Locking yourself in the library for days isn’t the answer. Human interaction (even in small doses) keeps you sane. Whether it’s grabbing coffee with a friend or joining societies at your university, socializing gives your brain a much-needed rest!

8) Relax Like You Mean It

Relaxing isn’t watching Netflix while stressing about work. Intentional relaxation, whether that’s reading, listening to music, or practicing mindfulness, helps you recharge. Relaxation is crucial for students. It reduces stress and improves focus and concentration. It also enhances memory and boosts overall well-being. This leads to better academic performance and mental health.

Self-care isn’t just bubble baths and face masks (though those are great too). It’s about building habits that help you survive, and maybe even enjoy, student life!
