Many people believe that a PhD is the only path to a successful career in science. Some may even think that pursuing an undergraduate or master’s degree in science is pointless. Fortunately, this is not the case! There are plenty of rewarding science careers that do not require a PhD. In this blog post, I will outline some of these careers!

The specific skills required depend on the specific lab you are working in. These skills can range from a variety of wet lab techniques to computational skills. However, there are general skills that will always be needed. It’s important to highlight these in your cover letter and CV.

- Organisational Skills: The ability to organise your time and manage data. This ensures that all of your work is completed within certain deadlines.

While being an RA, you will gain a wide range of laboratory skills, which will benefit all research careers. In academic institutions, RAs can progress to senior research roles, lab managers or administrative positions. In industry, companies tend to place more emphasis on practical skills and experience. Therefore, there can be opportunities for advancement to senior research roles, project management or other leadership positions without a PhD. Description

- Writing and content creation: Writing clear, concise and engaging articles, blog posts, reports etc. about scientific topics
- Editing and proofreading: Edit and proofread content to ensure accuracy, clarity and consistency
- Communication: Build and maintain a network of contacts within the scientific community
Qualifications
A degree in any field related to scientific research is preferred. If you know you want to write about a specific research area, it would be beneficial to study for a degree in that field. Also, extra qualifications in journalism, communication, or English can be advantageous!

3) Patent law
Description
A patent lawyer, also known as a patent attorney, is a specialised legal professional who can advise clients about patents. They may also work for an organisation in industry to protect their inventions. Key responsibilities include:
- Advisory Services: Proving legal advice on patent infringement and enforcement
- Patent Prosecution: Drafting and filing patent applications conducting patent searches and advising on patentability
- Patent Portfolio Management: Managing and maintaining a portfolio of patents for clients
- Due Diligence: Conducting due diligence in mergers and acquisitions involving patent assets
Qualifications
An undergraduate degree (at least 2:1) in a technical or scientific discipline e.g. engineering, biology, chemistry, or physics, is normally required. This is because patent lawyers must understand the technical details of the inventions they work with. You would also need to pass various qualifying exams. As a result, they ensure clinical studies are conducted following regulatory requirements, study protocols, and ethical standards. They play a vital role in the clinical research process, working closely with principal investigators, sponsors, and study participants.
Qualifications
Most employers require a bachelor’s degree in health-related fields such as nursing, biology, biochemistry, health sciences or public health. Additionally, a master’s degree in clinical research, public health, or a related field can be advantageous. It may even be required for more advanced positions. Experience working in a clinical environment, such as a medical research facility can be useful.
After gaining relevant work experience in clinical research, you can obtain two certificates: the Certified Clinical Research Coordinator (CCRC) and the Certified Clinical Research Associate (CCRA). 5) Science Teacher
Description
Science teachers are at the forefront of education, teaching children science but also providing support as they grow. People choose to teach a range of different ages from primary school to sixth form. Responsibilities include but are not limited to, developing and implementing lesson plans, conducting basic laboratory experiments to reinforce scientific, concepts, and evaluating and monitoring students’ academic progress during the year.
Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in the science subject you would like to teach, such as biology, chemistry, or physics, is required. Additionally, obtaining a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), which takes between 12 to 24 months to complete, is beneficial. While not mandatory for teaching, this qualification is government-funded and will help you save money while gaining a recognized qualification. In the UK, a Qualified Teacher Status is required, which can be obtained through undergraduate or postgraduate teacher training. A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is also necessary to work with minors.

8) Science Policy Advisor
Description
Science Policy Advisors analyze scientific research to inform and develop public policies related to science and technology. They must conduct in-depth research on scientific issues, trends, and advancements to advise policymakers. Additionally, they liaise with scientists, government officials, industry leaders, and the public to gather input and build consensus on policy decisions.
Qualification
